Athletics
Lamar offers a diversified and comprehensive athletics program. Lamar excels in sports as well as academics, fueling the body as well as the brain. We have knowledgeable and experienced coaches in all fields. The high school level is much more competitive than middle school and some of the sports will require try-outs. We take our sports seriously at Lamar and expect our student-athletes to be vested 100% in their chosen sport as well as their academics. We have student-athletes every year from all sports that receive scholarships to college and they work very, very hard to get there, right along with the coaches.
For more information about our sports teams check the website or feel free to contact the athletic office 713-522-5960 Extension 008234 or KVESSELS@houstonisd.org

MISSION
Student-athletes involved in the Lamar Girls’ Basketball Program will have a positive experience which will support life skills such as discipline, respect, hard work, and teamwork.
PHILOSOPHY
Student-athletes need guidance, positive role modeling, and coaching on the court. Successful programs take a extensive approach to coaching and creating an atmosphere that provide players, coaches, fans, administrators, and the community with a sense of belonging.
As coaches we must be well prepared, well rounded, knowledgeable, and a “student of the game,” who leads by example and maintains a standard of academic success, winning, and discipline. Our coaches must drive and motivate student-athletes to obtain their full potential as a player and person.
Players gain confidence and a love for the game through positive feedback from parents, coaches, and players. Girls’ basketball can be an exciting opportunity for your daughter to have fun, develop as an individual/team player, learn discipline and responsibility, and mature as a person.
Competition is an important element of any sport and as student-athletes grow they naturally become more competitive. We feel our role, and that of the parents, is to help the student-athletes develop the ability to deal with competition in a healthy way. Effort and attitude is the focus. If we can achieve that, then we have accomplished more than winning.
PROGRAM GOALS
- To graduate 100% of our seniors each and every year.
- To support each and every player in our program.
- To become better student-athletes, and citizens.
- To maintain a 3.0 program GPA.
- To improve individual player skills.
- To generate enthusiasm, excitement, and support for Lamar Girls’ Basketball.
- To work HARD, play HARD, and show RESPECT.
Cheerleading
Head Coach: Mrs. Maggie Welch
Welcome to the page of the 2022 National Champion Cheer team
At Lamar Cheer our goal is to support others and promote school spirit at Lamar High School. Our program has two teams: JV and Varsity. Grade level does not ensure a position on either and our team is selected on tryout basis. Cheerleading at Lamar is both sideline and competitive. We cheer at numerous sporting events and other school activities. Promoting school spirit is our job and something we strive to do. We also have a competitive team that competes in the winter. Our 2022 team took the title National Champions along with 2 division titles this past season. We are very excited for the new potential for the upcoming year. Our cheer team is like a family, and we encourage everyone to try out!

Golf at Lamar High School is a competitive program with a rich history and a winning tradition. The program consists of both boys and girls teams. Our season consists of up to eight tournaments for each team during the school year played throughout the Houston Region, culminating with the District and Regional Championships in April.
We take great pride in the accomplishments of the Lamar Golf Teams. Together with the administration, the parents, and players, Lamar Golf embraces a competitive spirit that focuses on golf as a sport for life. The program promotes positive attitudes, respect for the game, and respect for teammates and fellow competitors. The program’s success stems from individual accomplishments and improvements that translate into a team mentality. For the past 8 years we have won the District 20-6A championship 5 times for the boys and three times for the girls. In addition, we have been to the regional championship each of those 8 years for both teams.
We are fortunate at Lamar to have as our home course, Memorial Park, one of the finest municipal courses in the country. We have a great relationship with the PGA professional staff. Lacrosse Boys
Head Coach: Tray Harrell
What is Lacrosse?
Lacrosse is North America’s most ancient team sport. Sometimes called “the fastest game on two feet,” lacrosse was originally played by the Native American tribes of the Iroquois nations. It’s a game that has the physicality of football, the flow and play-making of basketball, the hand-eye skill of baseball, and the endurance of track. It’s a game of speed, spontaneity, teamwork, and fun. At Lamar, we emphasize a quick-hitting, fast-breaking style of play with lots of creativity.
Why play Lacrosse at Lamar?
First, lacrosse is just plain fun. Second, it’s a team sport, so you’ll make friends and learn the valuable lessons of teamwork. Third, lacrosse develops athletic versatility and agility. We encourage all of our lacrosse players to play other sports—lacrosse provides an excellent athletic foundation for the well-rounded athlete.
If you want to have fun, make friends, and develop your athleticism, then WELCOME TO LAMAR LACROSSE!
Regular Season and Fall Training/Open Tryouts:
The Lacrosse season begins in January and runs until early May. The team plays a schedule of approximately 12+ games against other schools in the Houston area. During the regular season, we have daily practices from 5:10PM to 6:45PM. During the fall, we practice three times a week (tentatively Mon, Tue, Wed).
Facilities—
Lamar and South Campus:
Lamar Lacrosse has access to the synthetic turf field at Lamar, although access may be limited depending on the schedule of other Lamar teams. The lacrosse team also has access to three beautiful natural grass fields at South Campus (3600 West Bellfort).
Participation:
Since its formation in 1988, the Lamar Lacrosse team has followed the principle that any student wanting to participate would be allowed, and no student would be turned away because they could not afford equipment or team fees. Because lacrosse is not funded by HISD/UIL, we are a club sport. This means we are completely self-funding and rely heavily on volunteers and encourage lots of parent support.
Eligibility and PE Credit:
All members of the team are subject to the UIL Eligibility rules governing “no pass, no play”. In order to compete, students have to be in good academic standing just like any student in one of the Lamar varsity programs. Upon completing certain forms, team members can receive PE Credit for participation in Lamar lacrosse.
Lacrosse Girls
Head Coach: Myleka Booze
Lamar Women’s Lacrosse is increasingly competitive in the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League. The team offers both Junior Varsity and Varsity level players.
The Lamar Women’s Lacrosse Board of Directors, run exclusively by parent volunteers, hosts an informational meeting in early September for new and returning players. This is followed by an optional, yet highly recommended, fall practice schedule, beginning in mid-September, which helps returning players renew and develop their skills, while incoming freshmen adapt to the high school level of play. Team selection is completed in January prior to the start of the season. The regular season runs from January to mid-April, potentially followed by playoff games into early May.
This club, associated with Lamar High School, holds all practices and home games off site at the South Campus sports complex. There is a nominal fee for fall practice for players who choose to participate. There is required fee for the season with payment due in December. Financial assistance is available on an individual basis.
Players are eligible to earn off campus P.E. credit through participation in this club sport.
The team is dynamic, and competitive with goals of winning the season, participating in championship tournaments and preparing the player for college level play. For a complete calendar of our activities and updates throughout the year, please visit lamarwlax.org.

We strive to create a safe, fun, and highly competitive soccer learning environment for our student-athletes. We offer 3 levels of competitive teams based on technical soccer skill, in game mental ability, classroom excellence, and overall student leadership.
Competing for district titles, making the playoffs, and dominating in local and state tournaments are among the many goals we have set within the program. Our program has accumulated many players who have been awarded All-District Selections and aspire to compete and gains collegiate attention each season, all while focusing on academic success above all.

The Lamar High School aquatics team is comprised of over 80 girls & boys in grades 9-12. The team has captured a District Championship title for the past 24 seasons while earning as high as a third place finish at the State Swimming & Diving Championships. High school swimming is a winter sport with the season running from Oct-Feb. Athletes are scheduled into either 1st or 5th Period Swimming for both semesters of the school year. Workouts are very demanding and the team practices both before & after school and attends meets on a weekly basis.
Many of the team members are enrolled in IBDP classes and graduate with a high ranking in their class, while maintaining a vigorous practice schedule. Athletes are encouraged to do their best in the classroom while remaining a full-time team participant.

Lamar swimmers & divers are truly student-athletes.
We have varsity and junior varsity squads for both girls & boys. Many team members are involved in other activities at Lamar High School, but team attendance standards must be maintained.
Tryouts are held twice a year (May & August). Athletes with previous experience should call or email for pre-approval from me in order to enroll in the class.
Boys & Girls Track and Field
Head Coach: Gerrick Green

One of the top goals of the Lamar High School track program is to build on an already strong tradition that can be continued well on into the future. A major goal this year is to create a total program that will compete at a high level. As coaches here at Lamar, our priority is to educate the kids about the sport and good sportsmanship. The athletes will be taught about the sport, and then they will be trained to compete at a high level. Track members need to be aware of our mandatory practice schedule and the emphasis that we place on strong work ethics. We feel that in order to build a more competitive team, athletes need to be present in order to gain an opportunity to receive maximum training. We look forward to working with you and preparing you to be a better athlete and a better person.
Communication
This year, we will be using a free app called Sports You to communicate important updates to athletes and parents concerning practices, meet schedules, and other important information about the Lamar Track Program. Parents and athletes are welcome and encouraged to join Lamar Track & Field Program code is 5RK2HJQL, Coach Green at Gerrick.Green@Houstonisd.org.

Volleyball
Waterpolo
Head Coach: Sally Woolweaver

Water Polo is a commitment. You have to commit to the entire year. You do not have to be on the water polo team to be on the swim team, but you must be on the swim team in order to play water polo.
Mission:
To create a team spirit in what is essentially an individual sport. The water polo team helps the swim team feel more connected. The swimming on the swim team is conditioning for the water polo competitions.
Objective:
Water polo season is from August - October. There are varsity and junior varsity sections of water polo. Students sometimes receive college scholarships for their water polo skills. Develop a physical fitness and team spirit through play in water polo, which helps further develop strength in swimming in general.
Students must be passing in order to play. It is an athletic aspect of Lamar and students are given PE credit for participating.
Season and Practice Times:
Our Water Polo season runs from August through October. We do practice before school starts, starting typically on August 1st. Practices are scheduled after school hours once school starts. We recommend all our athletes to maintain a balance between their academics and athletics.
**Schedule is morning and afternoon practices during the season.
Our Achievements:
-
We are incredibly proud of our Boys' and Girls' Water Polo teams. In 2022, our Boys' team outdid themselves, securing victory in the Purple Monkey Tournament and winning District. They also made it to the Regional Quarterfinals in the playoffs.
-
Our Girls' team also showed exceptional talent and determination. They secured the 2nd position in District and made it to the Bi-District Playoffs. Their performance was commendable, and we look forward to an even more successful season next year.
-
In 2011 and 2012, Lamar water polo achieved amazing results. Girls came in fourth in the state and boys came in fifth in the state. Both boys and girls placed 2nd in regionals. Four players were named to the all-region, all-state, and all-American teams. Both the Lamar girls and boys' teams have made it to state for the past 5 years, and we hope to accomplish the same thing every year!
